Contaminated soils removed from sewers in Brockport
As the result of testing completed in February, General Electric has excavated and removed from its former site at 200 State Street, Brockport, sediment in storm sewers that has been found to contain elevated levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). On April 5, sediment from an abandoned sewer line near the northeast corner of the main building was removed, and on April 19, sediment from three manholes inside the main plant building was removed. more

Kendall voters to see school budget tax increase
Voters in the Kendall Central School District will be asked to cast their vote for a school budget of $12,464,258 when they go to the polls on May 15. more

Local legion helps rebuild Pineway Ponds
Playgrounds don't build themselves. When officials from the Town of Ogden decided that a wooden playground structure at Pineway Ponds Park was nearing the end of its life expectancy, plans to build a new playground emerged. Through the help of the Ferris Goodridge American Legion Post No. 330, that plan became a reality. more

Sweden may need to raise water rates mid-year
The Town of Sweden raised its water rates for the first time in two years on January 1. The 15-cent increase raised the rate to $2.65 per thousand gallons, partly to cover the increase set by Monroe County Water Authority. Sweden purchases water from the authority and resells to its residents and businesses. more

Two on ballot for Kendall Board of Education seat
Voters in the Kendall Central School District will have a choice between two candidates when they go to the polls on May 15. more

The Genesee County Office for the Aging and the New York State Bar Association will be co-hosting the 7th Annual Statewide Decision Making Day. This year's event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, May 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Senior Center, 2 Bank Street, Batavia. more

Baseball skills competition in Hamlin
Hamlin Recreation is conducting a Diamond Skills Baseball Competition May 10 at 6:30 p.m. The Diamond Skills Program, sponsored in part by Toys "R" Us and Fleer Trading Cards, is a skills competition open to boys and girls ages 7-14 nationally. The competition is free to all youngsters who participate. more

Celebrate trees at Springdale Farm
Tree periscopes, soil boxes and pulleys to measure the height of a tree are some of the new children's interactive exhibits in the Springdale Farm Enchanted Woods. The public is invited to use the new exhibits at a Tree Celebration on Saturday, May 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Springdale Farm, 696 Colby Street in Ogden. The Tree Celebration is a free event. more

Chili churches join together for National Day of Prayer
The National Day of Prayer is an annual event established by an act of Congress that encourages Americans to pray for our nation, its people and its leaders. Thursday, May 7, has been designated as this year's National Day of Prayer, and Billy Graham is the Honorary Chairman for 2001. more

Chili Grange meeting changed for May
The Chili Subordinate Grange #393 regular meetings are usually held on the first Tuesday of every month and are held at the old Grange Hall now known as the Chili American Legion post #1830 located at 450 Scottsville Chili Road. The meetings are held at the main meeting room known as the "Widener" room. An elevator has just been installed making this room handicapped accessible. more

Post 788 presents awards

Hiscock-Fishbaugh American Legion Post 788 presented the Red, White and Blue award to three Hilton residents at the April meeting. The award is designed to recognize individuals, organizations, businesses and industries which are promoting Americanism through action. more

Participants sought for Holley anniversary celebration
On August 4, the Village of Holley will be celebrating it's 150th Anniversary of Incorporation. The festivities will consist of arts and crafts, food, entertainment, a parade and fireworks. more

Ride the historic Erie Canal tour during July bicycle tour
New York Parks and Conservation Association (NYPCA) is hosting a bicycle tour July 8-15, as part of their on-going efforts to promote the Erie Canal Corridor and bicycle tourism. Registration for the Buffalo to Albany trip is limited to the first 250 riders, and fees increase after June 17. Therefore, anyone interested in participating in this event should sign up as soon as possible. more

Spencerport Crop Walk raises fund for food shelf
Eleven Spencerport area churches will participate in the annual Crop Walk on Sunday, May 6 at 1 p.m. more

Spencerport IGA will open May 20
Spencerport’s new IGA store will open its doors to shoppers on May 20. Closed since last fall, the former Jubilee will re-open under new owners Mike Ward, Scott Ward and Doug DeFillips just a couple weeks later than originally predicted. The partners own five other groceries stores in the Rochester area and the Spencerport location has become home to their corporate offices. more

SUNY Brockport welcomes families of graduates
SUNY College at Brockport will confer degrees on its graduates in two ceremonies on Saturday, May 12. more

C-C board candidates to speak at info night
District residents are encouraged to attend the Candidate Information Night and Budget Hearing Tuesday, May 1 at 7 p.m. in the Central Office Board Room, 139 Fairbanks Road. Candidates will speak about their views and will answer questions. In addition, there will be a presentation on the proposed budget. more

C-C students to perform world premiere
Churchville-Chili sixth-grade students will perform the world premiere of renowned composer Dr. Louis Ballard's "Scenes from Indian Life" arranged for elementary band May 2 at 7 p.m. in the Middle School auditorium. The piece was commissioned for the middle school students, Ballard's first composition project for a public school band program. The performance is free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. more

Fourth-grader steps into General Douglas MacArthur's shoes
Fourth-grader Phil Griffee filled some mighty big shoes recently as he portrayed General Douglas MacArthur for Munn Elementary School's wax museum event. Fourth-graders chose a person who made an impact on American history, researched and wrote a paper about their subject, then, as a homework assignment, created a poster and a costume. more

GCC board approves 2001-2002 budget
Genesee Community College's Board of Trustees, meeting at the Batavia Campus, approved an operating budget of $20,050,000 for the 2001-2002 fiscal year this evening. The budget will now be presented to the Ways and Means Committee of the Genesee County Legislature, sponsor of the college. The Legislature must approve the budget prior to its adoption. more

Select chorus receives superior rating
The Hilton Merton Williams Middle School Select Chorus, under the direction of Marcia Sheremeta and Hope Randolph, received a rating of 'Superior' recently at the Third Annual Middle School Festival held at the Hochstein School of Music. more

Spencerport student is recipient of DAR Good Citizens Award
Spencerport High School senior Rebecca Kellerson is the regional recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution's Good Citizens Award given by the Irondequoit chapter of the DAR. She received a $100 savings bond, a certificate of recognition and a DAR Good Citizens pin. more

WE-MO-CO students earn awards at Regional Skills Competition
Forty students from the WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center recently took first, second or third place at the Regional VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) Skills Competition at SUNY College of Technology at Alfred. more

PACE exercise program to be held
Hilton-Parma Recreation, in conjunction with the Arthritis Foundation, will be offering another session of the popular exercise program, "PACE," for persons of any age. The course will be held for six Wednesdays beginning May 2 and ending June 6 from 9 to 9:50 a.m. in the Village Community Center gym, 59 Henry Street, Hilton. Cost of this program is $19 for the entire session or $13 for Preferred Care members. more

Senior housing and care facilities sponsor seminar on services
Seniors, their families, and their caregivers are invited to attend a special seminar on senior services by Lorraine V. Anderson, Director of the Monroe County Office for the Aging (MCOFA). The seminar is free and open to the public, and will be held on Thursday, May 10, at 3:30 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Valley Manor Apartments, 1570 East Avenue. Chili gymnast is regional Floor Exercise Champion
Bright Raven gymnast Krystal Kaminski of Chili captured first place in floor exercise at the USAG Level 9 Regional Championship held April 21 at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. At Regionals, 17-year-old Krystal had the opportunity to compete with the top gymnasts from New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island and Maine. more

Golden Eagles dominate doubleheader
The Golden Eagles (19-7, 11-5 SUNYAC) dominated Utica/Rome (5-17, 3-9 SUNYAC) in both games of the doubleheader, winning 18-0 and 10-0, respectively. Brockport gave up only three hits in the two games. more

Golfers wanted to "link" school and career
Registration is open for Spencerport High School's second annual Chipping in for Career Connections golf tournament. The tournament is scheduled for Monday, July 30 at Salmon Creek Country Club. The money raised will support career scholarships for graduating Spencerport students and the high school's Career Day 2002. more

Hawks lose to Attica
After jumping out to a 2-0 in the first inning, the Holley varsity baseball team allowed ten runs to score, losing 10-2 to Attica on April 16. more
