Brockport accepts Visitors Center bids
The acceptance of the bids for Brockport's Visitors Center and Canal Museum construction drew a round of applause from audience members at the May 3 village board meeting. More than a year has passed since the village received grant funds to revamp a section of the Erie Canal in order to make it more attractive to visitors. more

Brockport sees development of its "north end"
Brockport continues to see growth within the village's business district including development in the "north end" which recently celebrated the grand opening of two new retail stores under the same roof. more

Brockport sets sewer rent resolution
It was the matter protocol and procedure that the residents questioned at Monday, May 3's, public hearing on the Village of Brockport official's proposal for "considering and imposing sewer rents." The fees for the sewer rents and the establishment of a sewer district were figured into the village's 2004-2005 budget which was passed on April 26. more

Brockport Symphony Orchestra to perform at Rochester church
The Brockport Symphony Orchestra has been invited to perform at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Rochester. St. Andrews has a long musical tradition and strong musical program. "We are very excited about this opportunity," said Brockport Symphony Association President, John Centrone. more

Monroe County residents, age 60 years and older are invited to participate in the annual Senior Citizen Trout Derby to be held Thursday, May 27 from 7:30 to 11 a.m. at Powder Mills Park's Wadham Lodge, East Pavilion. more

New meals on the menu for Monroe County Meals on Wheels clients
Visiting Nurse Service of Rochester and Monroe County, Inc. (VNS) has added a new meal service to its menu of program options through its licensed agency, Visiting Nurse Signature Care - The Dining Car was designed to bring greater home-delivered meal choices to Monroe County residents. more

Presbyterian Church in Brockport receives grant
The First Presbyterian Church of Brockport has received a $5,000 grant from the Sacred Sites Program of the New York Landmarks Conservancy. The grant supports the current replacement of the roof of the 1853 building. The church, at 35 State Street, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. more

Rump Group endorses Renaissance Square Project
A group of prominent local business and higher education leaders, known as the "Rump Group," is throwing their support behind Rochester's Renaissance Square project. more

Spencerport residents learn about storm water drainage
On Saturday, April 24, the Village of Spencerport was the scene of a pilot program put together in conjunction with the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County. Highway Superintendent Tom West, village employee Donna Stassen, and village resident Pat Chapman were key in organizing this event. more

"Step up to the Plate" project's focus is on community and youth
Coaches, neighbors, employers, educators, faith leaders, parents, teens and families are invited to come together on May 25 to focus on creating character and competence in youth. The "Step Up to the Plate" project's goal is to learn and share new ideas for improving the lives of area youth. This is the third annual "Promise of Assets" event. more

Stocking up
NYS Department of Environmental Conservation crews pump 14,600 Steelhead trout into Sandy Creek in Hamlin, near Hamlin Beach State Park on April 29. That same day, 5,000 Steelhead were released into Salmon Creek in Parma. On April 30, crews returned to Sandy Creek with 57,000 Chinook salmon fingerlings. more

Boater Safety certification classes offered
The Orleans County Sheriff's Office, in partnership with the United States Power Squadron, has scheduled the next round of boat safety classes. These classes will be held at the Carlton Fire Department Recreation Hall on State Route 98 in Carlton Station, approximately 2.5 miles north of Route 104. Classes are three hours in duration and attendance at all four classes is required for certification. Class dates are May 10, 12, 17 and 19. more

Brockport CROP WALK a success
Over 100 walkers participated in the Brockport CROP WALK on May 2. They even raised funds for the Brockport Ecumenical Emergency Food Shelf and for the Church World Service. more

Students learn about alternative energy
Brockport Central School District Board of Education member Joan Fenton recently turned her new hybrid car into a learning experience for fourth- and fifth-graders. She talked to students in the Academically Talented program about how the car runs on electricity generated by the braking action of the car and uses less gas. more

Brockport Central School District registering students for kindergarten
Brockport Central School District residents who have a child who will turn five years old by December 1, 2004, that child is eligible for kindergarten in September 2004. Churchville-Chili Board of Education revises estimated tax rate
Due to a change in estimated tax assessments from area towns, the Churchville-Chili Board of Education has revised the estimated tax rate to 3.34 percent for the proposed 2004-2005 school budget. This is a change from the previous estimated tax rate of 4.28 percent. more

C-C students win in Peace Poster Contest
Two Churchville-Chili students won in a district poster competition sponsored by the Churchville Lions Club. Mackenzi Martin, a sixth grader at C-C Intermediate School, and Michael Melito, a seventh grader at C-C Junior High School, are the winners. more

Fairbanks Road third-graders learn about sled dogs
Fairbanks Road third-graders learned how smart sled dogs are from expert sled dog trainer Jim Phillips. Phillips, who is also an author, and four of his sled dogs came to Fairbanks Road school to teach third-grade students the sport of sled dog racing. During his classroom visits, Philips showed students his racing sled and equipment and explained how he trains his dogs. more

Arbor Day project brings students together
Tammy Zaffuto, a teacher at Brockport's Hill Elementary School, recently brought her fourth grade students together with some of her former students from eight years ago for an Arbor Day Project. The day had a special meaning for her former students, who are now seniors, because they planted 27 Norway Spruce trees when they were in fourth grade. more

Four vie for two Brockport Board of Education seats
Voters in the Brockport School District will be asked to choose two candidates from a slate of four when they go to the polls on May 18. On the ballot will be incumbents Joan Fenton and Fred Porter, newcomer Sarah Brinklow and Terry Wolfe who has sought a board seat in the past. more

Hilton voters go to polls May 18; $54.5 million
budget proposal includes full-day kindergarten

Residents in the Hilton Central School District will go to the polls on Tuesday, May 18 for the annual Budget Vote and Board Election. Two propositions will be on the ballot: $54.5 million Budget Proposal and a $760,000 Bus Purchase offset by 73 percent state aid. In addition, three positions on the Board of Education are open for which three candidates will be on the ballot. more

Interact club attacks project
There is an organization in Parma that has developed a reputation of getting the job done, and they are the Hilton High School Rotary Interact Club, according to Hilton-Parma Recreation Director Steve Fowler. more

Kendall schools receive NY State Assembly grant
Through the efforts of Assemblyman Charles Nesbitt and Senator George Maziarz, the Kendall Central School District has been awarded a grant in the amount of $40,000 to be used for the purchase of computer equipment. The grant will help the district comply with period-by-period attendance accountability mandates. more

Meet the Holley BOE candidates May 10
Holley Central School District residents can meet candidates for the Board of Education on Monday, May 10 at 7 p.m. in the Holley Elementary School cafetorium. There are nine candidates vying for three seats on the board. more

Pop and Rock Music Concert at
Hilton High School benefits music program

The community is invited to a special concert on Friday, May 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hilton High School auditorium, 400 East Avenue, Hilton, featuring the ten-piece professional band, the Half Ton Horns. The group includes Hilton High School Marching Band Director, Jared Streiff, among other music professionals and it will be donating their time as a benefit for the high school program. more

Students recognized for Doing the Right Thing
Two Brockport students were among 10 students from the Rochester area to be the March winners in the "Do The Right Thing" Program, sponsored in part by the Rochester Police Department. Adrianna Weed, a first-grader at Ginther, was nominated by her mother for donating 13 inches of her hair to the Locks of Love Foundation to make wigs for cancer patients. more

Senior citizens celebrate anniversary
The Hilton-Parma Senior Citizens celebrated the 20th Anniversary of their Senior Center on Saturday, May 1 at the Hilton Fire Exempts. The award winning "Traveling Cabaret of Irondequoit" entertained with talents of song, dance and comedy music revues to an audience of 160 people. more

Booster group celebrates Brockport athletes
The Brockport Basketball Booster Club hosted the 26th Annual Brockport High School Basketball Program Boys and Girls Banquet and Awards Dinner at Hickory Ridge Banquet Center in March. more

Joe Dorney and Ian Walzer won their first doubles match to give Kendall a 3-2 victory over Holley in high school tennis. more

Kara Golis wins all around
Bright Raven gymnast Kara Golis of Churchville earned first place all around at the USAG Sectional Meet held in Orchard Park May 1 with a high score of 36.95. Kara and her teammates competed in the Level 6 competition for gymnasts age 12 and over. more

Spencerport baseball splits
James Pozzuolo tossed a 3-hitter as Spencerport defeated Webster Thomas 8-1 followed one day later by an 11-3 loss to Greece Olympia. more

SUNY Brockport in NCAAs Tourney
SUNY Brockport won their first SUNYAC Baseball Championship since 1975 and is heading to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in its 58-year history as a result. more
