Canal history focus of two Greenway Walks
Two of the area's most well known and respected canal historians will both be leading walks on the Genesee Valley Greenway within Letchworth State Park on the afternoon of Saturday, June 15. Each event will focus on a separate aspect of the history of the Genesee Valley Canal which played a major role in the development of western New York and transported passengers, agricultural products, gypsum, lumber, and manufactured goods from 1840 to 1978 between the Erie Canal in Rochester and the Allegany River near Olean. more

Star of the West Milling Company dismissed
An Article 78, filed by residents of the Village of Churchville was dismissed on a technicality following a May 23 court hearing, resident Larry Powell said. The petition was dismissed because the Star of the West Milling Company wasnt included as a respondent on the Article 78. more

Renovations begin at Parma Town Hall
Renovations are underway at the Parma Town Hall that will add space, increase usability and create a more defined entranceway. The $231,000 project is scheduled to be completed within the next four months. more
SPARTAC seeks members
For the past three years, members of Brockports SPARTAC team have offered the villages police department extra sets of eyes and ears. In September, the population in the village increases dramatically but the size of the police force remains static and that is when members of the volunteer group, Students, Police and Residents Together Against Crime, band together. more

Blue Angels to fly in Rochester air show
The Rochester International Airport will be the site of the ESL International Air Show 2002 on June 22 and 23. The show will feature the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and over 60 aircraft, both on static display and in the air. Ground displays will include a T-1 Jayhawk, T-6 Texan, AH-1 Cobra and a T-38 Talon. more
Brockport firefighters break ground at Firefighter Monument site
Brockport firefighters were joined by Mayor Josephine Matela and representatives from Allied Builders for a ceremonial groundbreaking at the site of the Firefighters Monument in front of BFD Station 4, Main Street at Park Avenue. more

Brockport YMCA offers arts program for children
The Brockport YMCA is offering a summer cultural arts program for local children ages 5 to 11. Local artist Denise Purvis will take children on a multi-cultural adventure, where they will experience art, music, dance, games and many other activities from countries around the world. Through participating in these activities, children will learn about the lives and values of people from many cultures. "Kids love making art, and the process offers children an opportunity to experience the traditions of another culture. They have fun, they learn about others, and they are proud of themselves for creating something unique," states Purvis, program facilitator. more
Citibank honors YWCA Financial Empowerment Program participants

Clarkson supervisor honored for housing efforts
On Monday, June 3, Clarkson Town Supervisor Paul Kimball will be honored for his commitment to affordable housing at an open house at Seldon Square Apartments. The festivities run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the community building located at 99 Sunset Center Lane in Clarkson and the event is free and open to the public. more
Clean water for Vroom Road residents
Through the efforts of New York State Senator George Maziarz and Ogden Supervisor Gay Lenhard, 78 parcels on Vroom Road are now enjoying fresh clean public water from their taps. Residents there have been dealing with contaminated wells for more than 20 years. The water main has been fully installed by an outside contractor, with some finishing work yet to be done by the Ogden Highway Department. more
Cold temperatures delay strawberry crop
Field reports indicate that the harvesting of the strawberry crop in the Rochester region will likely be delayed by at least seven to 10 days due to the abnormally cold temperatures that the region received during the month of May, according to Bob King of the Monroe County Cornell Cooperative Extension. Strawberry growers have reported a total of 10 separate incidents of critical cold temperatures. Damage to the strawberry crop has been estimated to be as much as 20 percent where control measure have been applied and at least 50 percent or more where frost controls were not utilized. more
Cool Kids cookin' all summer long
The only summer series of its kind in New York - the popular and growing event series, Cool Kids - is returning to its birthplace, Sagawa Park, Main Street, Brockport, on Friday, June 14 at 7 p.m. for the fifth straight summer. more

The Greater Rochester Visitors Association (GRVA) has published a free 24-page guide to attractions and activities in the Greater Rochester area. "A Visitor's Guide to Rochester 2002/2003" is filled with information on everything from accommodations to the zoo and lists major events through May 2003. more
Go Art! announces May-June exhibit schedule
The Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council announces the May-June exhibit schedule for its three gallery locations: 204 Main Street in Batavia; in Kafana Gourmet Coffee, 10 East Bank Street in Albion; and in the Orleans County Chamber of Commerce, 433 Main Street in Medina. Reporting dead crows helps assess risk from West Nile Virus
To assist in determining the level of risk to humans posed by West Nile Virus (WNV), Monroe County health officials are once again requesting that residents report all dead crows. "Crows, more so than other bird species, appear to be the most susceptible to WNV and therefore serve as an early warning sign about the level of virus circulating in our community," said Monroe County Health Director Dr. Andrew Doniger. more

Doyle announces early retirement program
Monroe County Executive Jack Doyle announced an early retirement program for county employees. The retirement program is the latest in a series of measures introduced to reduce the cost of county government and prevent a property tax increase. Doyle previously announced a reduction in capital projects and travel expenses, along with other initiatives to address the county's challenging fiscal situation. By offering the early retirement program, the county hopes to encourage eligible employees to retire and lessen the severity of a reduction in the county workforce, which could potentially include hundreds of employees. more

C-C school calendar revised
The last day of school for kindergarten students will be Thursday, June 20. Students in grades 1-6 will have a full day schedule on Wednesday, June 19. They will attend school for a half day on Thursday, June 20 and Friday, June 21, which will be their last day.
C-C voters approve school budget
On May 21, Churchville-Chili residents voted in favor of the district's $50,964,764 budget by a margin of 77 votes. The vote tally was 750 for and 673 against. more

Special meeting scheduled for C-C School District
Please be advised that the Churchville-Chili Central School District Board of Education will meet in the Administration Board Room, located at 139 Fairbanks Road on Tuesday, June 18, at 7 p.m. for a special meeting. The board is expected to go into executive session to discuss the Superintendent's contract.

Spencerport School district budget passes
Spencerport School District residents approved the $50,335,097 budget for the 2002-03 school year with a vote of 1,864 in favor, 915 opposed at the polls on May 21. Residents also approved the transportation proposition authorizing the district to purchase 10 school buses and a maintenance van for a total of $569,994. more

this time to Naples. On Wednesday, July 10, the Hilton-Parma Seniors will travel to Naples for a luncheon at the Redwood Restaurant. After lunch, there will be a matinee performance of the comedy, "Prelude To A Kiss," at the Bristol Valley Playhouse, then continue to Joseph's Wayside Market for shopping and Widmer's Winery for a brief tour and tasting. more

Individuals 60 or over who are Genesee County residents can contact the Office for the Aging for a Health Insurance Counseling Program which might be able to help find a way to pay for prescriptions. The Senior Wheels USA Program makes available power (electric) wheelchairs to senior citizens (65 years old and up) and the permanently disabled at no cost to the recipient, if they qualify. more

Blue Devils drop semi-final
The Brockport Blue Devils varsity baseball team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, but allowed Fairport to score five times in the fourth and lost to the Red Raiders 5-3 in the Section V Class A semi-final game May 28. more
Local students win regional competition
Students from Rochester Taekwondo Club recently competed and placed in the 2002 AHN American Taekwondo Classic, in Cincinnati, Ohio. The team, from the Rochester Taekwondo Club, consisted of Master Robert Fujimura (Fairport), Coach Jerry Fedele (Webster), Black Belt Competitor Dan Alessi (Penfield), and Ashley Burge (Fairport), Emyli Fujimura (Fairport), Jacob Fujimura (Fairport), Katie Fujimura (Fairport), Jessica Heintz (Rochester), and Jesse Welch (Pittsford). more
