Brockport's 3M/Dynacolor clean up could include molasses
The recipe for remediation of the 3M/Dynacolor property in Brockport calls for molasses. After outlining four alternatives for further remediation at the contaminated site, Kelly Cloyd, project manager for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, explained the process of introducing food grade molasses into the soils to enhance bioremediation. more

Fourth graders in 134th district invited to suggest a law
Assemblyman Bill Reilich invites any 4th grade students in his district to participate in a contest. "Since New York state standards include the study of state government in 4th grade, I thought this program would be both a fun and informative culminating activity for 4th grade students in my district," Reilich said. Each participant will be allowed to submit one idea for consideration. more

Hamlin idol focused on stardom
No so fast American Idol, this drama club dropout has plans to be what everyone is talking about. Gina Mastrodonato, a 2001 Kendall High School graduate and Hamlin resident, is focused on stardom. Right now she is featured in "Joey and Maria's Comedy Wedding," but is hoping to someday hop from this traveling theatre to the big time. more

Local couple's outreach a year-long effort
As they sit in their kitchen on a sunny weekday morning, Donald and Marie Cario discuss how much they love their home. It's a charming home on Canal Road in Adams Basin and they have a picturesque view out their back window. It isn't these amenities for which the Carios are most thankful. more

Monroe County to review Capital Improvement Plan
The Monroe County Planning Board will hold three information meetings on the county's proposed Capital Improvement Program for 2005-2010 which all government officials and the general public are invited to attend. One area meeting is set for Monday, March 8 at 7 p.m. at the Ogden Community Center, 269 Ogden Center Road, Ogden. more

Parma Town Board updates Fairfield Place proposal
The draft environmental impact statement for the Fairfield Place development is due back to the Parma Town Board in the near future. At the March town board meeting, the board reported to concerned citizens that all but four of the 100 points of concern had been addressed by the engineers, and that as soon as this was completed the report would be given to the town board. more

Sewer problems plague Brockport Street
For the past 10 years, Chris and Melissa Norment have dealt with sewer backing up into their basement more than a dozen times. The sewer lines on Holley Street in the village of Brockport have been "tv'd," been checked for broken pipes and other hazards to no avail. more

Survey shows Hamlin residents like it as it is
The Master Plan survey results are in and Hamlin residents overwhelmingly said: Leave Hamlin alone. The survey, which was distributed last year, asked more than 50 questions to try to decipher people's thoughts on how Hamlin should develop, and how Hamlin was (or was not ) meeting residents' needs. more

Town employees partner
with Wal-Mart to help family

On January 6, Ogden resident Olga Radu was killed in a car accident on Route 31 in the town of Sweden. The mother of nine children had only arrived in the United States from the Ukraine the previous September. The family had recently settled in a rental house on Colby Street. more

Victorian tea to celebrate Brockport's 175th anniversary
A Birthday Victorian Tea will be held on Sunday, March 14, as one of several events to celebrate Brockport's 175th anniversary. The event will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Board Room of the Village Hall, 49 State Street in Brockport. Victorian dress, such as hat and white gloves for ladies, is optional. more

In order to keep bringing music to the community, representative Bethany Centrone came before the Brockport Village Board requesting a donation for the Brockport Symphony Orchestra (BSO) at the March 1 board meeting. more

Curves supports communities with food drive
Curves, 30 Minute Fitness and Weight Loss Center, will be joining the Curves International Inc. "Food for Friends" food drive to benefit local food banks. more

Drumcliffe School of Irish Arts performs March 20
The Drumcliffe School of Irish Dance will perform a repertoire of award winning dances, old favorites and new works of choreography at East Rochester High School on March 20. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. and will feature Irish Dance from 11th century Ireland to the distinct contemporary style associated with the world renowned shows like "Riverdance" and "Lord of the The Dance." more

Early childhood workshops set for St. John, Hamlin
St. John Lutheran Evangelism committee, in conjunction with St. John Early Childhood Programs, will hold four workshops to present tips on how to enable parents to help their children to be more successful in life. more

Hamlin residents enjoy Snow Day fun
Sunday, February 29 was a day of outdoor fun at the Hamlin Town Hall. Over 150 people participated in activities including horsedrawn wagon rides, snowball target shooting contests, ice cube stacking challenge, sports, snow sculpture and crafts. more

Hilton-Parma Recreation releases spring brochure
Hilton-Parma Recreation's spring brochure is now available with registration beginning on March 8. Brochures have been distributed through the Hilton Central School District and will also be available at the Parma Town Hall, the Parma Public Library and the office at the Village Community Center at 59 Henry Street. more

Pipes and Drums ready for St. Patrick's Parade
Members of the Gates Keystone Club Police Pipes and Drums have been busy practicing for the Annual Rochester St. Patrick's Day parade to be held March 13 beginning at 12:30 p.m. In 2003, the band won the Laurie B. Houlihan Award and in 2002 they were voted the Best Pipe Band by the parade committee. more

Scouts in Troop 53 earn badges, advance
Members of Chili Boy Scout Troop 53 have noted the following accomplishments: Jerry Cardilicchia and Eric Strassner advanced to First Class; Paul Wolski earned his Bronze Eagle Palm. In order to earn the Bronze Eagle Palm a scout must earn five merit badges beyond Eagle Scout achievements. more

Sterling Renaissance Festival to hold auditions
The Sterling Renaissance Festival, in Sterling, New York will be holding auditions for its interactive improvisational troupe, known as "The Bless the Mark Players." The festival is seeking 35 experienced male and female actors of various ages to portray Elizabethan characters, and perform interactive improv and scenarios. more

SUNY Brockport makes donation to fire department
SUNY College at Brockport President Paul Yu (right) presented a $5,000 donation to the Village of Brockport Volunteer Fire Company March 2. Accepting the check on behalf of the Fire Department was Fire Chief Christian McCullough, along with Village Mayor Josephine Matela, who were joined by members of the Fire and Ambulance Corps. more

Tom Vandertang remembered in Ogden
A dedication ceremony was held at the Ogden Senior Center on February 20 in memory of Ogden Councilman Tom Vandertang. A plaque bearing his name was installed on the porch, which was the councilman's last project before he died in 2003. more

Assemblymember urges raising minimum wage
The New York State Assembly passed legislation to raise New York state's minimum wage from $5.15 to 7.10 an hour (A.9710). Assemblymember Susan John (D-Rochester/Chili/Rush/ Wheatland) sponsored and introduced the legislation. more

Bailey, Bausch seek re-election in Bergen
Incumbents Wayne Bailey and Robert Bausch are seeking re-election to their trustee seats in the March 16 elections in Bergen. more

Holley elections see contested mayoral race
Voters in the Village of Holley will be asked to choose between two mayoral candidates, Trustee Skip Carpenter and political newcomer Tom O'Neill, at the polls on Tuesday, March 16. more

Registration for incoming September 2004 kindergarteners into the Hilton Central School District will be held March 15-16. Hilton's full-day kindergarten program opens in September. All schools, Northwood Elementary School, Village Elementary School and Quest Elementary School, will have full-day programs. more

Rachael McAnallen, nationally recognized math educator, visited Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES to work with teachers on how to introduce algebra into the elementary and middle school math curriculum. more

Nominations sought for Byron-Bergen alumni recognition
The Byron-Bergen Central School District wishes to recognize alumni by including them in the alumni Hall of Fame. Four new inductees will be selected this year and a ceremony and reception will be held September 10. more

New York Learn and Serve Grant
Thanks to a New York State Learn and Serve grant for the 2003-2004 school year, Byron-Bergen students in grades 7-12 are being trained as American Red Cross emergency shelter volunteers. more

Pajamas needed for play promo
A community pajama drive has begun in conjunction with upcoming performances of "The Pajama Game" in the new district auditorium at Spencerport High School. Clean pajamas in good condition will be collected through March 24 for use as props and decorations during this musical production on March 25-27. more

PTSAs team up for Internet Education for Parents program
The Brockport and Kendall CSD Parent Teacher Student Associations present a session for parents called "Internet Education for Parents." The presentation Tuesday, March 9 will be held at the Brockport A.D. Oliver Middle School, 40 Allen Street, in the LGI (Large Group Instruction Room) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. more

Spencerport BOE to address bus issues
A plan will be proposed to the Spencerport Central School District Board of Education on March 9 to add additional buses to the school bus fleet so that elementary students can get home earlier and activity buses could be restored. more

St. Pius students paint mural
Staff and students from St. Pius Tenth School in Chili filled the gym with color in an art project sponsored by the school. Students painted sports murals on the gym walls to help brighten up the school gym. more

"The Pajama Game" comes to Spencerport High School
Spencerport High School's annual musical returns this year with performances of "The Pajama Game." The long-running Broadway hit will be presented in the new high school auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, March 25 and 26, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 27. more

It's not worth winning if it comes easy, and it was anything but easy for Brockport as they defeated Greece Arcadia 25-19, 27-25, 22-25, 8-25, 25-23 to take their second Section Five girl's volleyball title in three years. more

Bright Raven gymnasts win at I Love NY Cup
Bright Raven gymnasts competed in the 2004 I Love NY Cup held in Binghamton February 13-15 at the Broome County Arena and won several awards. more

Grillo and Williams state wrestling champs
Holley senior Andrew Grillo and Kendall senior Donald Williams both took their final matches to win New York State wrestling titles among small schools in competition held at the University of Buffalo. more

Jr. Jazzercise has come to Brockport
Over 30 boys and girls ages 5-12 participated in Jazzercise moving and exercising program set to today's popular music. Children learn the importance of physical activity, talk about nutrition and have fun all at the same time. more

MCHSHL honors ten area players
Five area players were named first team all-stars and five more to the second team when the Monroe County High School Hockey league announced the 2003-04 all-star nominations. more

SUNY Brockport's men's basketball team is heading to the NCAA Division III tournament for the third time in four seasons and Spencerport native Brandon Mills is among those leading the way. more

Spencerport Sports Booster Club will host its 4th annual Toys for Sports fundraiser at Taylor Elementary School on Saturday, April 3 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The event consists of a huge Toy Show with statewide toy and sports card vendors, as well as a formal Toy Auction later in the day. more
