Citizens group files motion to stop Star of the West tower project
As a way to ensure that proper procedures are being followed, a small citizens group has filed an Article 78 to stop the construction of eight, 110-foot grain silos, topped with 37.5 foot grain elevators at Star of the West Milling in the village of Churchville. more

Cub Scout Pack 165 awards it scouts
On Sunday, April 21, 12 second year Webelos Scouts from Pack 165, St. John the Evangelist, Spencerport, were awarded the Arrow of Light, the highest rank in Cub Scouting. Later in the evening, 10 of these scouts crossed-over in Boy Scouting, moving on into three different Boy Scout Troops. more

Erie Canal towpath "sweep" scheduled
A "sweep" of the Erie Canal towpath on Saturday, May 18, will kick off the Adopt-A-Trail program in the Town of Sweden for the 2002 season, according to Bill Andrews, coordinator for the town. Eight volunteer groups have agreed to take responsibility for segments of the trail from Gallup Road to County Line Road. more

Exceptional Moms, exceptional kids
Heidi Wagner realized with wonder that her daughter Carolyn’s first grade drawings showed sophistication beyond her years. As a volunteer in her son Ryan’s kindergarten classroom, Judy Taylor noticed that he was catching on to reading faster than the other kids. And it sure didn’t take long for local Olympian Lyndsay Wall’s mom, Sandy, to recognize that Lyndsay had more physical grace than other toddlers. more

The Holley Fire Department held its annual awards banquet to acknowledge members giving outstanding service to the community. This year, Chief Jeffrey Lavender with First Assistant Chief Mark Porter and Second Assistant Chief Rick Cary awarded the Chief's Award to Harris Reed for outstanding service. more

New look for Parma Town Hall
New six-foot sidewalks, parking curbs, and several replacement doors are being installed at Parma Town Hall as part of a $25,000 Block Grant allocation from the Community Development Administration. more

Parma library seeks public input on its future
For more than two years, the Parma Public Library Board has been talking about the possibility of expanding the library, located at 7 West Avenue in the heart of Hilton village. Now they are turning to village and town residents to ask, "Is expansion good enough?" more

RWCCO hosts auction and dinner
On Saturday, May 18, the Roberts Wesleyan College-Community Orchestra will again sponsor one of its popular activities - the annual auction and lasagna dinner. Glenn Lawrence, from Harris Wilcox Auctioneers, will be taking bids on art works, crafts, antiques, business merchandise, gift certificates and white elephant items. Churchville-Chili budget vote on May 21
Churchville-Chili residents will vote May 21 on the school district's proposed budget. Voters will also choose three candidates for the C-C Board of Education and decide on a resolution that would authorize the purchase of four school buses. The vote is from 1 to 9 p.m. in the Middle School gym, 139 Fairbanks Road. more

Final preparations for Spencerport Senior Bash underway
The parents of the students of the Class of 2002 are finalizing plans for the drug and alcohol free Senior Bash to be held immediately following the Senior Ball on May 31. The event will take place in and around the East Gym at Spencerport High School. more

Library holds read-in
Join the staff, trustees and friends of the Ogden Farmers' Library for an afternoon of reading on Sunday, May 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the village gazebo. The Read-In is part of the library's month-long celebration of "Get Caught Reading Month," an event sponsored by the Association of American Publishers which seeks to promote reading and literacy as a way of life and a recreational choice. more

Parma-Hilton Historical Society to host annual banquet
The Parma-Hilton Historical Society will hold their 33rd Annual Banquet on Monday, May 20 at the VFW Hall on Peck Road. The buffet banquet will be served at 6 p.m. and is followed by a short business meeting and installation of officers for the 2002-03 fiscal year. more

Poppy sales benefit veterans
The Poppy as the memorial flower for American war dead is a tradition, which began in the years following the First World War. Veterans returning to their homes in this country remembered the wild poppies, that lined the battlefields of France and Flanders. Soldiers of all nations came to look upon this flower as a living symbol of their dead comrades' sacrifice. more

Village clean-up day set
The Village of Holley will be holding a volunteer clean-up day on Saturday, May 18. All residents are encouraged to attend. Volunteers should meet at the Village of Holley's Canal Park Gazebo on East Avenue at 10 a.m.

Hero for a day
Jennifer Gibson's fifth-grade class at Holley Elementary School knows what it takes to be a great hero. As part of the fifth-grade requirements for language arts, they were reading biographies and autobiographies on famous people when Gibson decided to integrate the assignment with the school's character education program. more

At its April 23 meeting, the Hilton Board of Education voted to change the last day of school for all Hilton Central School District elementary (K-6) students. more

Principal David Dimbleby of Hilton High School has announced the first organizing meeting for a Hilton High School Alumni Association for Tuesday, May 21, at 6:30 p.m. in the High School Library, 400 East Avenue, Hilton. more

1,000 books to RTS "Books on Buses" Program
An outpouring of over 1,000 books was presented to Donald Riley, Chief Executive Officer of Rochester-Genesee Regional Transportation Authority, recently from students and teachers at Hilton's Quest Elementary School. more

Holley Elementary raises over $13,000
for American Heart Association
The Annual Jump Rope for Heart has become a tradition at Holley Elementary School. In its 17th year, the school has raised over $158,000 for the American Heart Association's research and programs. This year, 207 jumpers raised $13,006.32 by gathering pledges, then jumping rope in teams. more

Kendall inducts sixteen in National Honor Society
Sixteen students have been inducted into the Kendall Chapter of the National Honor Society this school year. They were chosen based on their display of character, scholarship, leadership and service. more

Magic of Milk at Holley Elementary
Holley first-grader Ashley Bradoc dons a magician's hat and cape to participate in the Magic of Milk for Health Show held recently at Holley Elementary School for kindergarteners and first-graders. more

Students of the Month at Holley Schools recognized
Holley Middle School and High School has launched its character education program, which is now mandated in New York state. A Student of the Month program is just one way character education is being introduced at the secondary level in Holley. more

Bright Raven gymnasts Jackie VanDeWater of Churchville and Tracy Apeland of Chili were big winners at the USA Gymnastics Level 8 State Championships held in Vestal April 27-28. more

Knights of Columbus Bike-A-Thon rolls into sixth year
It's time to get the bikes out and pedal down to Hamlin State Park for the sixth annual Hamlin Knights of Columbus - St. Jude's Children's Hospital Bike-A-Thon. This year's charity fundraiser will be held Saturday, May 18 from 8 a.m. till noon at Area 3 of Hamlin Beach State Park. more

Churchville-Chili scored two runs in the second and third innings and added one in the fourth on their way to a 5-0 shutout of Greece Olympia in boy's varsity baseball May 4. more
